Work to Begin on CITGO’s Historic Boston Sign

Houston, Texas, September 24, 2004 --- The historic CITGO sign in Kenmore Square has gracefully illuminated the Boston skyline for almost 40 years, enduring frigid New England winters and hurricane strength winds. Now, after all these years it is time for a facelift. CITGO Petroleum Corporation is undertaking a major restoration project on the famous 60 X 60 foot sign which, when completed, will restore the sign to its 1965 glamour.

With months of behind-the-scenes work now completed, the people of Boston will begin to see activity at the sign on Monday, September 27. More specifically, the panel on the Boston side of the sign will be completely removed and then restored. The company estimates that this side of the sign will be out of commission for approximately two and a half weeks while the work is being completed.

The Fenway Park side of the sign, on the other hand, will remain completely operational until the Boston Red Sox team completes its season. When baseball is over, that sign panel will also be removed and restored.

“After all these years we know how passionate Bostonians are about our sign, which is commonly referred to as a Boston landmark,” stated CITGO President and CEO Luis Marín. “That’s why we designed our refurbishment plan to accommodate not only the baseball schedule, but also to ensure the sign is illuminated as quickly as possible once the work begins. When both sides of the sign are completed, the people of Boston will have, once again, the famous CITGO sign illuminating the night.”

CITGO, based in Houston, Texas, is a refiner, transporter and marketer of transportation fuels, lubricants, petrochemicals, refined waxes, asphalt and other industrial products. The company is owned by PDV America, Inc., an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A., the national oil company of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
