CITGO Announces Fall 2004 Promotions
Houston, Texas, September 22, 2004 – The CITGO philosophy on consumer promotions is threefold: 1) provide lots of excitement and impact at the retail location, 2) offer prize packages that have stuff consumers really want/need and 3) fuel the effort with a strong media schedule. This fall CITGO has rolled out a lineup of regional and local promotional activities that take the brand message across the country with chances for lucky consumers to win prizes they can really use. Grand prizes run the gamut from a brand new GM Silverado truck to dream sports vacations and ultimate gridiron parties to last, but certainly not least, gas money.
The Return of the Great Gas Giveaway

The CITGO $1,000,000 Great Gas Giveaway promotion that ran nationally from Memorial Day Weekend through the Fourth of July was a decided success in terms of creating noticeable impact at branded locations across the country and leaving lots of happy winners holding their CITGO Cash Cards loaded up with gas money for a free ride on CITGO. That’s why the promotion is getting an encore performance in select markets in September and October. While the company is not giving away $1,000,000 this time, the promotion still packs a punch in terms of media exposure and creating excitement as it rewards lucky customers randomly for filling up at area CITGO locations. By the time it’s all said and done, more than 200 grand prize winners in Chicago, Milwaukee, Memphis, the Cleveland/Akron/Canton area, Fort Wayne and South Texas, will receive a year’s worth of gas from CITGO via the roving Prize Patrol vans.
As part of CITGO’s Hispanic marketing initiative, CITGO Marketer SSP Partners has teamed with CITGO to run the Great Gas Giveaway promotion in South Texas, with a major part of the effort aimed at the Hispanic market. SSP has devoted a significant portion of their radio schedule, on Texas English and Spanish-speaking stations in Corpus Christi, Laredo, McAllen-Brownsville and Victoria and in Lawton, Okla., to promote the Prize Patrol.
The CITGO Silverado Sweepstakes
Markets: Connecticut , Maine , Massachusetts , New Hampshire , Rhode Island , Northeast New York , Vermont
The CITGO Silverado Sweepstakes roared into New England on August 9 and ended on September 19. Consumers were encouraged to visit their neighborhood CITGO to enter for a chance to win one of three 2004 Chevy Silverados. Additionally, CITGO provided $200 CITGO Cash Cards to be given to each buyer of a new Silverado in the New England marketing area until all of the cards were given away. In the spirit of a great partnership, GM and CITGO both brought tons of value to the table including the chance for a lucky CITGO Retailer to win his or her own Chevy Silverado in an internal incentive contest. The promotion was supported with television, radio and point of purchase co-funded by GM.
The Ultimate Tailgate Sweepstakes

What could possibly be more exciting than being in the stadium, hearing the roar of the crowd and feeling that adrenaline rush as your favorite team goes for the glory out there on the gridiron? How about getting to host the ultimate tailgate party before the game? That’s exactly what two lucky winners of the appropriately named Ultimate Tailgate Party Sweepstakes will win in this exciting pigskin promotional opportunity. Consumers can enter the Ultimate Tailgate Party Sweepstakes by visiting participating CITGO locations for a mail-in entry, or by using their CITGO Plus card to automatically be entered, or they can register online at www.CITGO.com. Two lucky grand prize winners will get the opportunity to choose an expenses paid trip to the 2005 regular season college football game of their choice (from a list provided by CITGO at the time of the prize award) where they will bring nine of their friends to the tailgate party of their dreams. Each broadcast of the ACC and SEC Jefferson Pilot game of the week will carry commercials encouraging customers to enter the sweepstakes throughout the promotional time period. Additionally, the promotion is being advertised in select ACC and SEC college football radio networks.
The Texas Sports Fan Fantasy
In Texas, everyone knows football is more than a passion—it’s nothing short of an obsession. That’s why CITGO is doing its part to make it the best gridiron season ever for Texas fans by implementing the Texas Sports Fan Fantasy Sweepstakes wherein customers can vie to win the stuff football and sports aficionados dream of. As with the Ultimate Tailgate Promotion, consumers enter the Sweepstakes by visiting participating Texas CITGO locations for a mail-in entry, or by using their CITGO Plus card to automatically be entered, or they can register online at www.CITGO.com. To capture the attention of the Hispanic consumer, a portion of the point of purchase and media advertising is in Spanish. The promotion kicked off September 12 and ends October 24.
Two lucky Grand Prize winners will get the opportunity to choose their Sports Fan’s Fantasy vacation from what can best be described as the entire wide, wide world of sports. Grand Prize winners will choose a trip for two from a diverse array of premier college and professional sports events including football, baseball, basketball, motor racing, tennis and golf. The pillars of the media plan are the Houston Texan and Dallas Cowboy radio networks supported by local radio in select Texas markets.
The Ultimate Packer Backer Fantasy
For fifteen years, CITGO has shown its Packer Backer spirit by mounting a statewide promotion just as Packer fever inevitably starts to rise in August. The grand tradition has continued in 2004 with an all-new promotion that gave Packers fans a chance to win prizes that the Packer fan covets above all else: tickets to Packers games. Two Grand prize winners scored an expenses paid trip for four to see a Packers away game. The promotion was heavily advertised via statewide pre-season TV telecasts, radio and in-stadium media. Promotion timeframe was August 2 through September 10.
