Voluntarios de PDVSA Receive Points of Light Award
Sep 1, 2002
Former President George Bush, who serves as Honorary President of the Points of Light Foundation, presented the award at a ceremony held at the George Bush Presidential Conference Center and Library. Mr. Contreras, who served as President of the Council for Promotion of ""Voluntarios de PDVSA"" during the year 2000, stated: ""All of our PDVSA volunteer workers are very proud and thankful for such international acknowledgment. These feelings do not come just from honors such as this one, but, most importantly, from the smile of those disadvantaged human beings whom we have helped.""
CITGO's President added, ""PDVSA is a global energy corporation that understands and fosters the value of volunteer work among its workers to improve the quality of life within communities. Close to 15% of PDVSA's 40,000 employees participate in voluntary activities supported by the company.""
Nelson Rios, PDVSA's Public Affairs Corporate Manager and supporter of corporate volunteerism in the Venezuelan oil industry, also represented PDVSA's volunteers at the ceremony. Mr. Rios stated ""In our country, this volunteer action is the first and only one of its kind, and focuses mainly on the areas of health, education and the environment. Besides supporting the disadvantaged citizens and nurturing our own spirit, volunteerism contributes to the development of leadership skills and teamwork inside and outside of our corporation.""
Foremost among the volunteers' efforts is the ""One School per Year"" program. Through the program, the volunteers have literally built five schools to date, three in the eastern region and two central region of Venezuela. Another part of the program, ""Share Knowledge, Donate Your Books,"" has provided scarce resources to school libraries. Another part, ""Social Action Programs"", concentrates on the health area and stresses Eye Care Day. The program has provided services to over 7,000 patients, including almost 300 who required emergency eye surgery.
